Description

Objective
The goal of this internship is to provide the intern with experience cataloguing and organizing a small archive, with exposure to documents that demonstrate the history of one of Chicago’s cultural institutions through the lens of its fundraising efforts.  


Summary
The Development department is responsible for all of Shedd’s fundraising efforts, and liaises closely with its senior leadership and board of trustees. In this role, the intern will work closely with the Assistant Director for Prospect Development to assess and organize the departmental archive and prepare crucial documents on Shedd’s history and donor relationships for digitization. 

Responsibilities & Duties

  • Demonstrate commitment to Shedd’s vision, mission and values.  
  • Inventory, organize and classify documents and media to make them easy to search through 
  • Process and arrange archival collections, including refoldering, reboxing and removing rusty paper clips and staples   
  • Provide recommendations on and assist with digitizing documents; provide accurate descriptions and key terms for digital collection 
  • Assist staff with research projects utilizing the departmental archive 
  • Other projects as assigned

Qualifications

  • Ability to work independently 
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.  
  • Strong ethics and ability to maintain confidentiality of donor information.  
  • Basic knowledge of archival processing and description preferred 
  • Comfortable creating PDFs in Adobe software
  • Able to lift boxes up to 20 pounds 

Desired year in school: Any year in school.

Desired Majors: No specific major required. This internship is suitable for interns with an interest in archival or library sciences; museum studies; non-profit business and history; and/or Chicago history. 

Time Commitment
Minimum of 8 hours weekly for at least three months. Avaliability within normal business hours required (weekdays between 9am and 5pm).  Set schedule will be determined based on intern availability.
