Description

This is a responsible Operator I, Full-time position. This role conducts a routine and on-going assessment of both the Life Support Systems and Base Building operations.  S/he performs tests and analyzes data to assure the proper functioning of departmental equipment.  The Operator I monitors operation of the mechanical/electrical equipment. This position assures that the operations of Shedd Aquarium are efficient and continuous.

The daily schedule for this role is from 11:00pm – 7:00am.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrate commitment to Shedd’s vision, mission and values. 
  • Maintain and operate both life support and base building equipment and systems. 
  • Perform analysis of life support and base building systems and equipment on a scheduled basis, which includes water sampling, back washing, water testing, chiller operations, boiler systems, and assessment of equipment operation.
  • Monitor operation and maintain refrigeration for water cooling equipment, air conditioning equipment, boilers, heating, ventilating, hot water equipment, pumps, valves, piping, filters, and other mechanical and electrical equipment.
  • Record readings as necessary to assure proper operation of equipment
  • Report any problems/malfunctions on an “as needed” basis.
  • Perform routine and preventative maintenance on the building equipment, as directed.
  • Record data from completed rounds and analyses
  • Record completion of preventative maintenance assignments. 
  • Comply with departmental policy for the safe storage, usage, and disposal of hazardous materials.
  • Utilize environmental testing on public spaces, as directed.
  • Maintain a clean and safe workspace.
  • Maintain these records in a clean and organized manner.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Education:
  • Minimum of high school diploma or equivalent.

Experience:
  • Minimum of two years’ previous experience with filtration systems, water sampling and testing preferred.

Designations/Certifications:
  • Required to pass a TPC skills test in Fundamentals and Mechanical System Maintenance.
