Description

The Relief Veterinarian position supports the Animal Health Department by providing primary patient care and contributing to the preventive medicine program.  The role contributes to a comprehensive medical program, manages clinical medical cases, and provides reports on the health of the animal collection.

The veterinary team is composed of 2 clinicians, a resident, four veterinary technicians, a hospital operations manager, a clinical laboratory technologist and staff of the microbial ecology laboratory. The team works closely with three water quality laboratory technicians, and the fishes and marine mammals husbandry teams.  The Shedd Aquarium is a private, not-for-profit institution and is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums and certified by the American Humane Association.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrate commitment to Shedd’s vision, mission and values.
  • Contribute to a comprehensive preventative medical program for the care of the aquarium’s animal collection.  Participate in quarantine activities.
  • Develop and implement diagnostic and treatment plans for any collection animal.
  • Coordinate the management of clinical medical cases including diagnoses, treatments and postmortem examinations.
  • Provide timely reports reflecting the health status of collection animals to curators and/or other appropriate staff.
  • Maintain medical records.
  • Work with and mentor Veterinary Residents and Preceptors.
  • Manage activities to assure good communication and responsible management of resources while providing a high quality of service which includes strategic planning and financial management.
  • Weekend and evening hours may be required. On-call availability for emergency coverage may be required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:

Education:

  • Minimum of a Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from an AVMA certified program, with licensure in the state of IL, or eligible for an Illinois veterinary license.
  • Post-doctoral training in an internship or residency program focused on zoological medicine preferred.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 2 years, full-time experience working in the area of aquatic animal medicine, and experience with marine mammal medicine is required
  • In addition, a one-year clinical experience in a clinical practice/internship is preferred
  • Clinical proficiency in diagnostic testing is required (e.g. biopsy collection, blood collection, radiography, ultrasound, and endoscopy)
  • Ability to work independently

Designations/Certifications:

  • DEA licensure and USDA accreditation preferred
  • ACZM Board certification preferred
  • SCUBA certification preferred
