Description
The Coordinator of Conservation Policy and Advocacy works to advance the policy and advocacy mission of Shedd. S/he contributes to the research, analysis, planning and coordination needs of the Aquarium’s ocean/Great Lakes/local conservation policy program. The Coordinator works under the direction of the Senior Director, Conservation Policy and Advocacy, to execute the day-to-day activities and tactically implement the objectives of the conservation policy and advocacy team at Shedd Aquarium.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Demonstrate commitment to Shedd’s vision, mission and values.
- Performs research and analysis of state, federal and international ocean policy issues relevant to the Aquarium’s ocean conservation goals.
- Works with the Senior Director of Conservation Policy and Advocacy to develop and execute policy strategies at the state, federal and international levels.
- Assist Senior Director to Implement and execute of the conservation policy & advocacy annual work plans including all programmatic, budget, grant management and evaluation goals.
- Produces briefing memos, talking points, comment letters, informational folders and similar materials in support of the Aquarium’s policy strategies.
- Coordinates events, meetings, conferences, workshops and other forums to advance the Aquarium’s policy priorities and conservation goals.
- Coordinates the Aquarium’s lobbying compliance and reporting program.
- Maintain and build expertise of conservation policy issues. Serve as reliable, knowledgeable source of current, relevant information and provide content and input for Shedd messaging and communications needs.
- Track and analyze all relevant priority issues activity both federally and internationally.
- Collaborates on teams, including Conservation Partnerships and Programs, Learning, Marketing and PR, to develop and provide advocacy opportunities to various Shedd audiences through public programs, digital platforms and member communications.
- Demonstrates a commitment to professional and personal growth by initiating dialogue with colleagues, engaging in self-directed learning and focusing on professional development goals.
- Fulfill other duties as required.
Education:
- A BA degree with MA degree preferred in the public policy, political science, environmental policy or social-sciences.
- Knowledge of ocean/Great Lakes science and conservation policy
- Professional network in ocean/Great Lakes policy and science.
Experience:
- Minimum of 3 years of experience with public policy, government affairs, working for elected officials or governmental agencies, advocacy coordination and outreach.
- Excellent communication skills, including writing and public speaking. Ability to effectively communicate environmental issues to the public and special audiences.
- Outstanding verbal communication skills.
- Works well independently and in teams.
- Strong time-management and multi-tasking skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint is required.
- Demonstrated interest in and personal commitment to addressing conservation and sustainability issues and awareness of current local, national and international issues.
- Demonstrated ability to handle large workload in a fast-paced, high energy department.
- Demonstrated experience with financial and grants management.
- Demonstrated experience with program evaluation and data management.
- Experience working with the following audiences – teens, volunteers, adult professionals, families, and diverse communities.
- Some evening/weekend work required.
